I’m ready to talk about Lil Nas X’s influence on the fashion world, but are you? You may be stuck on the addictive, white, gender-benders, but it’s time to widen your gaze to the backstagers. Lil Nas X has been doing what Harry Styles has done- and in my opinion- better.
When you bend gender, you also bend… everything? Color, print, convention, normalcy.. The whole mix. Lil Nas rocks a vibrant, flashy look with his indispensable, classic hat and cowboy boots. And as I keep telling my friends, cowboy boots are back.
So is maximalism- if it ever left us, let’s be real. As Teen Vogue put it, “Lil Nas X knows when to take things a little ~extra~.” From Prince-inspired snakeskin, neon/zebra print, and flame-enmeshed matching-suit looks to monochrome, stormtrooper, and metallic fringe western looks, X is unabashedly himself.
Ignoring Lil Nas X’s impact on the runway does him even more injustice than bashing his fashion sense, believe it or not. You don’t have to like what you see, you just have to say to yourself, that’s huge. That’s bold, impressionable, authentic, and impactful.
